The Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) aimed at identifying the most practical and effective processing solution for the top-cut material.

The PFS was required to investigate, select, and consolidate the preferred processing alternative to progress into Feasibility Study (FS), develop a Total Installed Cost (TIC) estimate and schedule, and establish an FS scope to minimise the risk of cost overruns and/or schedule delays during the execution of the Project

UMS are fulfilling the role of the owners’ team for the Platreef Shaft 2 construction project. This includes supporting and managing the following contractors:

• Murray and Roberts
• • Raise bore drilling
  • Diamond drilling
  • Shaft sinking – slipe, line and equipping
• Stefanutti Stocks
• Headgear slide/construction
• Headgear structural construction

Refurbishment and recommissioning of the Burnstone Gold Plant, which included the following:

• Service, repair, refurbish and/or replace chosen mechanical, electrical and control & instrumentation equipment/spares at the Plant
• Service, repair, refurbish and/or replace chosen civil and structural related infrastructure at the Plant
•  Service, repair, refurbish and/or replace chosen mechanical, electrical and control & instrumentation equipment/spares at the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF)
• Service, repair, refurbish and/or replace chosen civil and structural related infrastructure at the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF)
• Commission the Process Plant and related facilities such that it is ready for production

The design scope for UMS included:

• Site layout and infrastructure
• Chairlift decline and travelling ways.
• Conveyor decline and “training decline”
• Main decline
• Level and access decline including workshop, ventilation pass and level dams.
• Decline support (anchors, wetcrete and tendons)
• Cover drilling
• Raise boring
• Brow stabilisation

The Karowe Underground Project (KUP) scope of works entailed the design and engineering for the blind sinking of two vertical shafts. The main production shaft will have a finished internal diameter of 8.5m and be sunk to a depth of 765m below surface level. The ventilation shaft will have a finished diameter of 6m and be sunk to a depth of 755m.

In addition to the shaft sinking activities, the scope of works includes the design and engineering for the equipping of the production shaft for permanent configuration and initial lateral development.

The UMS scope included the design and construction of the new vertical mine shaft and underground rock handling arrangements The ERO Brasil Caraiba project.

Design scope was for a shaft  approximately 1,500m deep with a hoisting capacity of 2.2 million tonnes per annum of ore and waste from underground to surface. The shaft will also be capable of raising and lowering approximately 840 persons per day, to and from underground.

The underground rock handling system included haul truck tips for ore and waste rock, storage silos for run-of-mine and crushed ore and waste rock, an underground primary crushing station, and conveyors to transfer the rock to the vertical shaft.

• The Burnstone Metallurgical Plant with a capacity 125kT/m milled ore, has been mothballed since 2012
• The UMS scope was to assess the condition of key and critical equipment is all engineering disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical, control and instrumentation, civil/ structural and piping
• This assessment included refurbishment or replacement cost sourcing and capital budge estimate development based on our inspections and assessments
• The CBE was used to form the budget for the refurbishment works
• UMS engaged with site works to perform the necessary physical construction/ refurbishment activities and facilitated the works of all OEMs/ Vendors
• UMS facilitated the procurement activities on behalf of the client and assessed each order technically, worked with the client’s procurement team and delivered the procured items to site for installation and commissioning
• The scope included up to C2 commissioning on all equipment

2022-2023

• SMC had completed a feasibility study on the implementation of a secondary crusher circuit to crush the -135; +50 mm size fraction prior to the milling Circuit – Called Feed Preparation
• UMS completed the debottlenecking project which sustainably increased throughput to the downstream grinding circuit. UMS completed the detailed engineering, oversight of fabrication and construction and assistance with commissioning of the designed solution
• The client has implemented this solution and has found that it there are many more opportunities to de bottleneck within the Zimplats group, with the additional throughput now made available

Design and install a solution to increase the current SMC pebble crushing capacity and efficiency by means of increasing cone crusher feed bin capacity; including installation of standby cone crusher unit as well as the installation of a High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) unit.

These modifications increased the pebble crushing circuit throughput to 120t/hr.

• Mets Projects SA, a subsidiary of UMS Group, was contracted by Mutupa Mining and Processing (MMP) to complete a Feasibility Study and execution work for the Manica Gold Plant in Mozambique. The Manica gold plant treats 42 000 t/month of ROM ore from the Manica resource
• UMS successfully completed the detailed design, procurement, site construction assistance and commissioning assistance

• UMS was employed as the owners’ team for the basic engineering phase of the project that was completed in February 2023
• The UMS scope of work included oversight for project management, engineering, procurement and project controls
• The project scope included the surface infrastructure, the crushing and screening plant and the copper processing plant. Also included in our scope was the hydrology studies and tailings design

2022 – 2023

Plant owner is currently undertaking construction directly

• Design, construct, commission and operate a crushing plant consisting of a three-stage crushing circuit with the relevant screening operations to produce 132 000 tonnes per month
• Screened material to be stockpiled in 2 separate stockpiles with a capacity of 30 000 tonnes of each
• The primary and secondary crushers were operated in open circuit and the tertiary crusher was configured to operate in a closed-circuit configuration with the primary screen

We were requested to install and operate and transfer a mobile crushing and screening plant for the client.

The Crushing and Screening Plant required to be designed based on the following key parameters:

• Total feed rate of 150 000 to 180 000 tons per month toll treatment contract
• Crusher design feed rate of 455 t/h
• Two screened products are to be produced namely Pebbles (-150mm +75mm) and Fines (-20mm)

The plant was sold in 2019.
